General Lab Techniques
Video-based training programs

The Gas Burner       GLT-102
Demonstrates how to produce a well-adjusted bunsen burner flame, showing the effects of heating with a luminous flame and of improper flame-to-object distance.    5 Minutes
The Separatory Funnel       GLT-103
A simple extraction of iodine from water using an organic solvent in a separatory funnel is demonstrated.   10 Minutes
Glassworking Techniques       GLT-104
Soft glass tubing is cut, fire- polished, bent, constricted and annealed using a bunsen burner and flame spreader.    9 Minutes
The Volumetric Flask        GLT-105
This program demonstrates the use of the volumetric flask in the preparation of a solution of known concentration.    8 Minutes
Decantation and Filtration        GLT-106
Techniques routinely used in gravity filtration. Use of filter paper so that the funnel stem fills with liquid. Decanting, washing the precipitate, and transfer of a solid using a wash bottle and stirring rod.    9 Minutes
Vacuum Filtration         GLT-107
This program demonstrates the use of a Buchner funnel and vacuum filtration apparatus to perform a qualitative separation.   9 Minutes
Qualitative Analytical Techniques        GLT-108
Demonstrates some of the basic techniques of semi-micro qualitative analysis. Includes techniques relevant to transfer, addition, and mixing of chemicals. Techniques related to precipitation (centrifugation, decantation, testing for completeness of precipitation, and washing) and safe methods of heating solutions are also shown.   17 Minutes
Ignition of a Precipitate        GLT-109
Ashless filter paper containing barium sulfate precipitate is transferred from a funnel to a porcelain crucible and ignited to constant weight. Close-ups of the ignition show the changes in the paper as it is dried, charred, and reduced to ash.   9 Minutes
Pipetting        GLT-110
The proper steps required to deliver accurate, reproducible volumes with a volumetric transfer pipet are illustrated. The pipet is inspected for cleanliness and then rinsed and filled with solution using a pipet aid (vinyl bulb). The errors that result from parallax are demonstrated and proper filling and emptying procedures are shown.    9 Minutes
Titration        GLT-111
A sample of acid is titrated with base using a buret. A rough titration is first performed to approximately locate the endpoint, and followed by an accurate determination. Using close-up photography, the proper reading of the meniscus is shown.    10 Minutes
