Absorption

In spectroscopy, absorption is the process by which a substance absorbs the electromagnetic radiation which is incident on it. The extent of absorption, denoted by I_abs can be measured by the difference:

I_abs = I₀ - I

where I₀ is the intensity of the beam of incident light and I is the intensity of the beam which has passed through the substance.
