Chromatographic plate

In thin layer chromatography (TLC) plates made of glass or plastic covered with a thin film of porous material are used as the stationary phase for the chromatographic separation.

Illumination
of spots in chromatography

It is impossible to locate the spots for colourless compounds on thin layer chromatography plates but such spots can often be located by shining ultraviolet light onto the plates or developing the plates in the presence of iodine vapour.
