Optical activity

Optical activity is a property of a substance which enables it to rotate the plane of polarisation of a beam of polarised light which passes through it.

If the sample causes the plane of polarisation to rotate towards a given line, e.g. for an observer looking in the direction of the source, the substance is known as dextro-rotatory. If the rotation is in the opposite case it is known as laevo-rotatory.
