A polymer carrying active groups which can undergo exchange reactions with ions in solution, e.g. in ion exchange chromatography.
Sulphonate groups at the ends of the chains readily undergo exchange reactions with cations, e.g. sodium ions in solution can replace bound hydrogen ions.
