Thermogravimetric analysis

Commonly abbreviated to TGA, it is a method of quantitatively analysing the degradation of materials as they are heated.

It involves measuring the mass of a substance according at a variety of temperatures. Usually, the TGA equipment has a program of selected heating which makes it possible to vary the temperature linearly as a function of time.

Actually the word " analysis" is redundant compared to the word "gravimetry". For this reason the International Confederation of Thermal Analysis and of Calorimetry (ICTAC) recommends that the technique is simply called "Thermogravimetry " and given the abbreviation TG.
